KOŽLJAK

On the western slopes of the Učka massive, opposite to the narrowest ridge, where once led the way to the Liburnia shore, is where the isolated elevation stands out. Here was built in the Middle Ages a citadel which the documents already in the 12th cent mention under the Croatian name Iosilach or Gosilach. That is the period when the place becomes a feud of the aquileian patriarchs.

In Latin documents from the 13th cent, the owners of Kožljak, to whom the patriarchs sub feudalized the citadel, were called "de Coslaco", and in "Delimitation of Istria" the glagolista text bears the phonetic form of its medieval name Kožlak. This is what is called also in the documents from the 15th cent, written in glagolista alphabet by the chancellors of the masters of Kožljak - Mojsjević from Senj. In the time when the Croatian name appeared, also a German name Wachsenstein began to exist.

Today we can see only the ruins of the old citadel, which was the last in the chain of fortified feudal residents that are stretched from the Kras of Trieste all along the western ridge of the slopes of Čičarija and Učka, still standing on that big living rock.

On the foot of the old fort during the history a new Kožljak started to live. It is a place that took over all the tradition and history of the once-upon-a-time town-fort. What remind us of the religious life of this place are the ruins of the St Hadrian Romanic parochial church. The St Cross church is set under the citadel in Kožljak, just next to the railway line Lupoglav - Štalije. It is believed, for this church, that it exists from the 18th cent as the result of the attached presbyterium on a medieval structure. The church contains an 18th cent altar; wall basis covered with marble intarsia and on it a pala from the 19th cent. It also contains a picture of Blessed Virgin Mary with Jesus dating from the 18th cent. The books and two grave stones at the facades of the church tell us that the pastoral service was always done by the priests who came from the neighboring Croatian seaside

In 1992 the exterior of the church was restored.
The St George church at the cemetery was built in 1590 according to the wish of the counts of the citadel Kožljak. Its function was to serve the serf. On the front wall of the church is immured a tombstone with epitaph in glagolista alphabet. The entire church was restored due to the donations of the inhabitants and emigrants.
